Chasing the Sunset: My Experience at Island Rock and Natural Bridge

There’s something about a Kalbarri sunset that sticks with you. After living here for a while, I thought I’d seen it all—endless stretches of rugged coastline, fiery skies over the Indian Ocean—but there’s one place that left me completely captivated: Island Rock and Natural Bridge.

It was a spur-of-the-moment decision one evening. The day had been perfect—mild temperatures, clear skies, and that kind of calm that makes you want to get out and soak in nature. I grabbed my camera, a thermos of coffee, and a blanket, and set out to see what all the fuss was about. Little did I know, it would become one of my favourite Kalbarri experiences.

The Drive: Anticipation Builds

The drive down George Grey Drive toward the Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs always feels like a build-up to something special. As you wind along the road, the cliffs come into view, their jagged edges a stark contrast to the smooth expanse of the ocean. I could already feel the evening light softening, painting the landscape in golden tones.

When I reached the Island Rock parking area, I was relieved to find it wasn’t crowded—just a few fellow sunset chasers setting up their cameras or quietly taking in the view. That’s one of the perks of Kalbarri: you can find moments of peace, even in the most iconic spots

Island Rock: A Golden Glow

As I walked up to the Island Rock lookout, I was struck by how the setting sun seemed to ignite the cliffs. The limestone formations glowed like they were lit from within, the warm hues of the rock perfectly complementing the vivid oranges and pinks of the sky. The ocean below shimmered in the fading light, and I could hear the rhythmic crash of waves against the cliffs—it was pure magic.

I spent some time just taking it all in, snapping a few photos but mostly just sitting quietly, letting the scene unfold. There’s something grounding about watching a sunset here. It’s not just the beauty; it’s the feeling of being small in the best possible way, like nature’s reminding you how vast and awe-inspiring the world can be.

A Short Stroll to Natural Bridge

Not wanting to miss a thing, I wandered over to Natural Bridge, just a short walk from Island Rock. If Island Rock is all about solitude, Natural Bridge feels a bit more dramatic. The way the massive arch frames the ocean and sky is something you really have to see to believe.

By now, the colours in the sky were shifting. The orange was deepening into fiery reds, and hints of purple and blue were creeping in as twilight approached. It was here that I decided to sit for a while, unpack my blanket, and pour myself a cup of coffee. There’s a simple pleasure in watching the world change colours right before your eyes, especially when the only sounds around you are the wind and the waves.

Tips for Your Own Sunset Adventure

  • If you’re planning to visit Island Rock and Natural Bridge for sunset, here are a few tips based on my experience:
  • Arrive Early: I got there about 30 minutes before sunset, which gave me time to explore both spots and settle in without feeling rushed.
  • Bring Layers: It can get chilly once the sun goes down, even after a warm day. A light jacket or blanket is a must.
  • Pack Snacks: There’s something about sipping coffee or munching on a snack while watching the sunset that makes the moment even better.
  • Don’t Forget Your Camera: Trust me, you’ll want to capture the way the light dances on the cliffs and ocean. Even a smartphone will do a decent job if you don’t have professional gear.
  • Take Your Time: The magic doesn’t end the moment the sun disappears. The afterglow, with its soft purples and deep blues, is just as beautiful.
  • If you’d rather watch the sunset from the sea instead of the cliffs, check out the Kalbarri Sunset Coastal Cliff Cruise. It’s another unforgettable way to end the day.
